The early 2000s were an exciting time for the web. Every business needed a website to establish its presence, and having the right skills and experience meant landing work was relatively easy. Freelancing offered me the freedom to explore and learn anything that caught my interest.

One of the most significant disruptions in web development during that time was the introduction of PHP. This scripting language opened doors for anyone to create dynamic, data-driven websites without being confined to proprietary software stacks that were typically only accessible to enterprises with deep pockets. This was the beauty of community-driven projects: the barrier to entry was lowered significantly. The LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) was open source and readily accessible to anyone with a PC, unlike .NET or Java-based stacks, which were more resource-intensive and complex.

This ease of access created countless opportunities for freelancers like me. With self-taught skills and the wealth of resources available online, it became possible to make a living as a freelance developer. However, web development wasn’t just about coding. Collaboration with talented designers was crucial. It’s rare to find a developer who is also a gifted visual artist, so working with designers was an essential part of the process.

I was fortunate to collaborate with a talented visual artist who also ran an interactive media business. He was not only skilled in design but also had a sharp eye for detail and a hustler’s attitude. From him, I learned invaluable lessons about efficiency, problem-solving, and the traits needed to succeed as a business entrepreneur. Our workflow was seamless: he would create stunning designs, and I would translate them into pixel-perfect websites. At the time, this often meant working with nested tables and clear pixels to ensure cross-browser compatibility—a challenge anyone who worked in web development in the early 2000s will remember vividly.

One of my proudest moments was completing a project in just two days and earning $2,000—a significant amount for an undergrad. It meant sacrificing weekends and juggling classes during the week, but the satisfaction of delivering quality work and being rewarded for it was worth it.

Growing up, I always had a strong interest in art and dreamed of becoming an artist. While life took me on a different path, my artistic background played a significant role in my ability to visualize designs and bring them to life on the web. Perhaps someday I’ll share more about how my journey diverged from art, but for now, I’m grateful for the skills and experiences that freelancing gave me.

Freelancing taught me the importance of discipline, adaptability, and collaboration. It’s like mixed martial arts—you’re not confined to one way of doing things. You have the freedom to approach problems creatively, but with that freedom comes the responsibility to deliver on time and with quality. For anyone starting their career or considering freelance work, I highly recommend it. It’s a fantastic way to develop initiative, think on your feet, and understand how your actions shape the opportunities and relationships around you.

During my undergraduate studies (shortly after leaving Linux Magic), I ventured into freelance work, building on my existing interest and knowledge in web development.
